# Use Reactive mode

Besides the standard Jupyter mode, Datalore offers Reactive mode, an alternative method for managing your notebook calculations.

Reactive mode is a reproducible mode that enforces a fixed top-down evaluation order and automatic recalculation of the cells below the modified one.

When combined with [interactive controls](interactive-control-cells.html), Reactive mode allows you to turn notebooks into interactive reports.

With Reactive mode enabled, notebook state is saved after each cell evaluation to ensure automatic recalculation of only those cells that are below the modified one. This can be particularly helpful when working on big projects.

> **Warning:**
> Reactive mode won't be able to restore cell state if one of the following (or similar to them) resources are allocated and not closed within the single cell:
>
>
>
> * file descriptors
>
> * TCP connections
>
> * physical devices allocation (example: GPU)

> At the moment, Reactive mode might be not working properly with all third-pary libraries. If you encounter any problems, we encourage you to share your feedback. You can email us at contact@datalore.jetbrains.com, visit our [forum](https://datalore-forum.jetbrains.com/?_ga=2.20758203.2052637866.1632755996-17994459.1626950460), or use the feedback dialog in Datalore.

## Preconditions

Consider the following when enabling Reactive mode:

* To make sure Reactive mode works properly with SQL statements, use [SQL cells](sql-cells.html) when working with databases.

* The minimum Linux kernel version required is 5.13. (applicable for Datalore On-Premises only)

## Procedures

Procedure: Choose Reactive mode for a new notebook

You choose Reactive mode on the Kernel tab of the New notebook dialog.

Procedure: Enable Reactive mode in the editor

You can enable Reactive mode at any time working in the editor. There are two interfaces that you can use: Kernel menu and ![Computation](https://resources.jetbrains.com.cn/help/img/datalore/2026.3/computation.svg)Computation tool.

Kernel menu:

1. Go to `Main menu | Kernel`.

2. Select the Reactive mode option.

3. Click the OK button in the Change computation mode confirmation dialog.

Computation tool:

1. Open the ![Computation](https://resources.jetbrains.com.cn/help/img/datalore/2026.3/computation.svg)Computation tab from the left-hand toolbar.

2. Under Kernel, click switch the Reactive mode toggle.
